My Love for you is real, by Ryan Adams
My love for you is real
It moves like he summer breeze
My love for you is strong
Lord, it brings me to my knees
It was born in the wild
It’s river long, rock strong
True and wild as hell
Honey now, my love for you is real
My love for you is calm
Candy sweet and thunder strength
My love for you is wild
It breaks the locket’s [incomprehensible]
My love for you is long
It crossed the oceans on a sail
My love for you is true
Meanings change but not the tale
It was born in the wild
It’s river long, rock strong
True and never [incomprehensible]
Honey now, my love for you is real
Oh, it’s real, oh, it’s real, oh
Honey now, my love for you is real
Like most people, part of my American Dream is to have someone to love and grow old with. I think that this song can relate to that in several ways. It simply talks about love - and a love that is "real" and "strong," "long" and "wild," one that contains "sweet" as well as "strength." This can be for the love of a spouse/significant other or love for a child or a parent. In my view in order to be happy one needs to surround oneself with love - love of self and love of others.
I think Ryan Adams' song does a great job in expressing this idea of love. One wants a true and honest love and that is the kind he is describing in his song. Let's look at the way uses metaphor to describe this love:
"It moves like a summer breeze" means that it is refreshing - and real love is refreshing! Think about a really hot day where you are sweating and along comes a nice breeze - don't you enjoy that!
"It's river long" means that it is unending - because rivers don't really have an end, do they? Rivers run into larger bodies of water, so they actually never end but keep going. That's the kind of love that I want.
"It crossed the oceans on a sail" means dedication and endurance. Do you know how long it would take to cross the ocean by sail? That is dedication - and dedication is real love.
I wish some of the lyrics were a bit more comprehensible. This just happens to be one of my favorite songs and perhaps that is because it is a song that I can relate to in my American Dream, in what I want to get out of life.
